The Near West Neighbors
About Us
Our association was incorporated in 1997 by a small group of concerned citizens, dedicated to raising the quality of life in our community. One core rallying point was to secure a ROPE Officer for our neighborhood. This ROPE Officer lives in our neighborhood, focusing on our specific needs and challenges, working closely with our group and local neighbors. Our current ROPE Officer is Greg Schneider and you can find his contact information on the Home Page of this site.
Since then, we've worked together in a number of areas: Additional street lighting, grants for neighborhood beautification projects, securing neighborhood grants from the City of Elgin for a variety of projects, helped to sponsor via grants the Community Mediation Center, establish a Unity Day for our neighborhood, neighborhod foot patrols, neighborhood watch activities, our own web site, historical recognition projects, helped to lobby for and establish the firehouse on West Chicago Street which continues to protect us all every day, with the support of the City of Elgin we painted the overpass bridge at West Chicago St and Crytal St, and more....
We hope that you'll come out and join us. All that really makes up an association is a collection of volunteers, working together to change their community for the better. And all it takes is a little time each month. The more hands we have, the more quickly and effectively we operate.
The Near West Neighborhood is made up of a very diverse range of people. It's a very rich pool upon which we can draw to enrich the quality of life in our part of town. We have even more ideas on ways we can enhance our neighborhood. Whether you can contribute a lot, or just a little, we're happy to welcome you.
Come join us and add to our pool of creativity.
